Nothing Comes from Nothing

“Ex nihilo nihil fit” or “Nothing Comes from Nothing” is a famous quote by the Presocratic philosopher Parmenides. Even though in life things happen out of doing something, does one dare to dream to do nothing?

I also thought of the lyrics Maria (Julie Andrews) sings in the Sound of Music “Nothing comes from nothing. Nothing ever could. So somewhere in my youth or childhood. I must have done something good.”

I yearn for the day to do absolutely nothing

I suddenly find that minute of nothing

And don’t like the feeling at all

The feeling of nothing is not great at all

Especially not when you waiting in anticipation

Waiting for news for so many things

You tell yourself it’s fine

To appreciate life, life in itself

Even in the moments of nothing

In the moments of nothing, you still breath

In the moments of nothing, you are alive

You are alive with possibilities!

I believe in God, love and life! Married to my friend, mentor and rock. We have been blessed with two beautiful girls. My personal journey provides opportunities for me to empower individuals to lead better lives. I have had a real desire to work with people for a long time and have always been fascinated with human behaviour and understanding how the mind works.
I love the following quote by H. Jackson Brown, Jr. “Remember that children, marriages and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get”

I like your essay and its angle on Parmenides is interesting. Of course, proverbial gurus on the top of the mountains “do nothing” but thinking is even more important then doing something physical but meaningless.

Thank you.

It is great to think, than doing nothing. Let me inform you that here ‘doing nothing’ means not about sitting idle. It is about a state of doing in which ego of the doer has disappeared, so now there is no doer. The person may be even more busy than you are, but he/she just let it happen through his/her body in that moment. Moment to moment living it is, there is no past and no future. Just in present one is alive like all natural objects around and in sync with them dancing. In that dance it is happening, not doing, so it is called ‘doing nothing’. Hope it will help. With Lots of Blessings.

Thank you for sharing!!… I expect we are always doing something even if it is only thinking.. I use a period of doing nothing to stop the world briefly, get off and reboot, to connect with myself.. it is called “meditation”… 🙂

Until we meet again..
May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
The rains fall soft upon your fields
May green be the grass you walk on
May blue be the skies above you
May pure be the joys that surround you
May true be the hearts that love you.

Meditation gives power to hold the ‘aha’ moment for longer time in your life.
My favourite meditation that I am practicing last 35 years is Awareness/Mindfulness Meditation during brushing my teeth. Earlier it was a robotic act and I used to think about past or future act/activity/instances etc. By being totally aware during brushing feeling it’s abrasion on every tooth, coupled with sensation of paste etc all thoughts slowly got dissolved and only present moment remained. Miraculous it is, as it engrossed all my activities over the period of time.

Hi, Hen, I love the colors in your photo! I disagree with Parmenides’ proclamation. I strongly advocate “nothing days,” or half days on occasion. Our bodies can get so exhausted on every level in this ultra-modern world, it can be restorative to honor them with beneficial rest! Hanging outside watching wildlife is one of my favorite nothing day “activities.” Great thought-provoking post! 🌞
