There is constant talk of economic recovery and the economy bouncing back. I read reports stating that the nominal repo rate for our country is at its lowest in 48 years. Consumers are being sold the concept that we are being helped in these very challenging times. I, however think that we as consumers are always paying the price. Here, I must admit that it is very difficult to remain positive in the many frustrating times we face. “Frustration, although quite painful at times, is a very positive and essential part of success.” – Bo Bennett
With a fragile economy, consumers are more apprehensive about what they spend their money on and when they do, they expect quality goods and services. I’m always on the look-out for where I can supposedly save. The following example will clear the ‘supposedly’ saving part. I purchased cheese the other day and thought that I am buying the normal size at a discounted price. On closer inspection I realised that the cheese was packaged to look the same as the one I would normally purchase but in fact was 200 grams less. I have noticed this on various other food items at different stores and felt the frustration rising of being ripped off, once again! I am sure many of us can relate…
What is one to do in cases like this? Should I complain? I probably should. I ponder as to whether this is “bait marketing” and is it fair? Are businesses trying to survive? Yet this also was happening way before the pandemic. I asked myself the question who’s responsibility is it to highlight or bring attention to these practices? Is it on me the consumer? Who is eating the cheese, anyway?
“Who is eating the cheese, anyway?” is a question asked with tongue in cheek. Who is responsible for your well-being? Who is responsible for the way you react in situations? I might not be able to influence the businesses marketing strategies nor consumer behaviour but I believe that I have a choice of deciding to buy that cheese or not. I believe that I have a choice of how I will react. I will most certainly be frustrated with the unjust in this world. I do have a choice though how I will respond. This can help me to alter my frustration and to encourage the development of resilience and to handle whatever comes my way in the most effective manner. I truly would like to continue to believe that it is my responsibility to remain positive in life.

Amazing to read your post … we’ve discussed the very same issue this week after a shopping trip. My frustration was with cleaning products where bottles are suddenly not filled to the top – same size bottle as before and more expensive (but less liquid) … 😳.
I did lodge my complain to the shop and they assured me they will remove those bottles – well, they will have to remove a lot of bottles (and I’m not sure they will do that).
Did I make a difference to the system … I doubt it, but I do think it’s important to raise our concerns.

Well said! I think many of us feel frustrated. I know that I almost feel what’s the point, but it is a bit like they are the silent bully. What I don’t like is the insidious dishonesty. I get that times are hard but then there should be more clarity. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for sharing and well said!!… yes, one has to be careful and more often check the labels, etc. when buying something to make sure one is getting what they wish… and at times it will be helpful to either contact the seller or let the people know what one has found, much like you have done!!… 🙂

Some frustration is key in life, because without it we would put up with almost anything. And some things need changing. They’ve been doing this gram trick for so long. Raise the price, make the package look the same or bigger, say new look with same recipe and most people don’t notice the difference. Little tricks given for the consumer. Raise wages and then raise the price on living so there’s really no difference. This sure can be frustrating!

I think the more we complain to manufacturers and markets, the better. In the meantime, we support businesses we feel are fair & ethical. I’m still grumbling over how manufacturers make it far cheaper to buy new stuff than to fix things…
